You are welcome to attend post natal yoga sessions from about six weeks after your baby has been born, generally it's 10 weeks if you have had a C-section. You do not need experience in yoga because a Post Natal teacher shows you how to do safe and effective postnatal yoga, which is specifically for new mothers so it can be the first exercise you do in the immediate months after birth.
You may come to Baby Yoga classes from about six - eight weeks after your baby has been born and has had their immunisations. If you are not planning to have your baby immunised then please let Melanie know.
The Post Natal Yoga in this Mum & Baby Yoga class aims to help you feel recharged, replenish your energy and begin to restore your core strength. Through our specialised yoga practice and breath awareness, you can learn how to release the normal tension that comes with feeding, carrying and comforting your baby. You can also learn comfortable postural habits, easy stretches and relaxing movements to take home and so extend the benefits of your session.
Post Natal classes include:
- Yoga
- Pelvic floor education
- Abdominal & core strength
- Postural awareness
- Relaxation
- Breath awareness
Mum & Baby Yoga includes specific Baby Yoga moves for your baby which aim to help with sleeping, better digestion and brain development and incorporates Baby Sensory, Baby Signing and Baby Reflexology where appropriate.
You can book a private clinic appointment for Baby &/or Post Natal Yoga in Paradise Clinic from 3 weeks old. The baby yoga moves you are taught aim to calm a fractious baby and help promote deep sleep. Baby Yoga may be useful for issues to do with digestion such as colic, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, and projectile vomiting etc.
If you cannot attend one of the scheduled classes but can get 3 or more Mums and Babies together then you can have a class timed to suit your schedule in Paradise Clinic in Kemnay.
For more information, contact Melanie if you want to attend a Mum and Baby Yoga session in Kemnay or online.
After a class you are welcome to join the Bumps and Bairns Lunch Club in the Loaves and Fishes for a drink or some lovely homemade soup and pancakes!
- There appear to be many incidental benefits of Baby Yoga, for example improved digestion as some of the movements massage the abdomen.
- The cross-patterning exercises you are taught aim to help Brain Development.
- Sleep Pattern may improve and you are shown moves to help calm a fractious baby.
- Baby Yoga aims to involve all your baby’s senses and develop a mutual understanding between baby and parents.
- Baby Yoga may increase your confidence when handling your baby and in more advanced lessons you may choose to be more daring, though initially you are advised to watch the teacher carefully as they demonstrate on a specially weighted baby yoga doll.
- Your teacher will not demonstrate on or touch your baby.
- If your baby happens to be asleep during the class then you can practice on one of the spare weighted baby yoga dolls if you choose or do some post natal yoga.
- By watching your baby’s responses during the baby yoga and using your own inate judgement. Your baby’s response will encourage you to go on with the baby yoga or just rest and be still with your baby.
- Baby Yoga includes movement and rhythm that stimulates your baby’s movement. They really enjoy it and may want to kick, so just let them!
- As teachers we are encouraged to ask that you don't force your baby to do anything in the class that they are not happy with. In this case just watch your baby move, and sing along or talk to them since it is not necessary to keep up with the class all the time.
- Above all remember that Baby Yoga is done with your Baby not too them, as we gently guide their arms and legs through all the amazing beneficial movements
If you have enjoyed the Post Natal Yoga part of the session and want to continue Yoga for yourself you can join the DRU YOGA class which is on a Monday in Kemnay Church Centre. Perfect timing for once the baby is asleep! Come along and get some relaxation time and gentle exercise for yourself before drifting off to bed!
The concept of Bumps and Bairns Lunch Club is for pregnant women who have finished work and want to meet other new Mums to get information and support and for new Mums to meet other new Mums!
Everyone at Bumps and Bairns has either been to Melanie for a treatment or come to one of the Yoga Classes. However you are still welcome to come along if you have not had a treatment/attended a yoga class.
